Navigating the Rules: What to Expect from Your BCBA

Who is Your BCBA and What Do They Do?
A BCBA holds a master's or doctoral degree and has completed extensive coursework, supervised fieldwork, and passed a rigorous national certification exam. This credential ensures they have the expertise to apply the principles of behavior analysis effectively.
Your BCBA will be responsible for several critical aspects of your child's therapy:
- Assessment and Goal Setting: They will conduct comprehensive assessments to identify your child's strengths, needs, and challenging behaviors. Based on this, they'll develop specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals for your child's program.
- Program Design: Your BCBA will create the individualized treatment plan, outlining the specific strategies and interventions to be used by the therapy team (Registered Behavior Technicians or RBTs).
- Supervision and Training: They will regularly observe therapy sessions, provide ongoing training and feedback to the RBTs, and ensure the program is being implemented correctly and effectively.
- Data Analysis and Program Adjustment: ABA is data-driven! Your BCBA will continuously analyze the data collected during sessions to track progress and make necessary adjustments to the treatment plan, ensuring it remains effective and responsive to your child's evolving needs.
- Parent Training and Collaboration: A crucial part of their role is to educate and train you, the parents/caregivers, on ABA principles and strategies. They will empower you to implement consistent approaches at home, generalizing skills across environments.
- Communication and Coordination: Your BCBA will serve as the primary point of contact for your child's therapy, communicating progress and collaborating with other professionals involved in your child's care (e.g., teachers, OTs, SLPs).
Your Role as a Collaborative Partner
While your BCBA leads the clinical direction, you are an invaluable member of the therapy team. Your active participation and understanding of the "rules" of engagement significantly contribute to your child's success:
- Open Communication: Be open and honest with your BCBA about your child's progress, challenges, and any concerns you may have. Share insights from home and other settings.
- Active Participation in Parent Training: Attend scheduled parent training sessions and actively engage in learning the strategies your BCBA recommends. The more consistent you are, the faster your child will progress.
- Consistency at Home: Implement learned strategies consistently in your daily routines. Generalization of skills is paramount, and this happens when interventions are applied across all relevant environments.
- Respect for Professional Boundaries: Your BCBA is a clinical professional. While they care deeply about your family, maintaining professional boundaries ensures the focus remains on your child's treatment goals.
- Adherence to the Treatment Plan: Trust in your BCBA's expertise and the evidence-based strategies they design. Deviating from the plan without discussion can impact progress.
- Punctuality and Preparedness: Be on time for appointments and parent training sessions. If there are specific topics you want to discuss, prepare them in advance.
- Feedback and Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions if you don't understand something. Provide constructive feedback so your BCBA can best support your family.
